Five Elements

This is the Key Element to Unlock Self Acceptance

Knowing your Element is the key to deep levels of self-understanding and self-acceptance. If you have seen some of my other videos, you will know that in Chinese Medicine we have the Five Elements – Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood…

.

As they are in nature, they are also reflected in our bodies – if they are in balance, we have health on every level,but if they are unbalanced or out of flow, we get illness, stress, blocks, stagnation, and dis-ease…

.

But in traditional Five Element acupuncture we take that one step further by realising that everyone has a resonance to one particular Element out of the Five – the one that is like our default setting, the one that shows itself the most in everything we do – our emotions, behaviours and patterns in life…

.

And in THIS video I want to explain why this ancient Chinese Medicine theory, and personality type framework, REALLY is the KEY part, the key Element (if you’ll pardon the pun!), to self acceptance and deep understanding of self… it is the reason my chapter in the book our co-authored book, “The Pay it Forward Series: Notes to my Younger Self – Volume 1”, has this title…

.

In it I talk about my journey with the Five Elements up to now, and tell my 14 year old self how all the challenges and emotions and fears she faces have their basis in the Water Element – the themes she has in her life at 14, the questions that she has no answers to, the difficulties she has in accepting and LOVING her true self… Everything is, or was, and STILL is (for me), BASED in the Water Element, and the fact I am a Water Element personality type, it is my constitutional energy, it is the one Element I resonate most with out of the Five (with Fire being my close second!), and the one that shows itself the most in my life…

.

Understanding YOURSELF on this deeper level allows us to let go of being super hard on ourselves, allows us to let go of the inner critic, allows us to SEE more clearly WHY certain themes keep repeating themselves in our lives… The Five Elements allows us to see that there is NOTHING wrong with us, we are not freaks or weirdos for feeling certain things, or struggling with certain things, or being DIFFERENT from other people – it is ALL just in our Element and that is ok…

.

Your Element gives you PERMISSION to ACCEPT your true self, and BE your true self… Your Element is the KEY to self-acceptance – it is the key that will unlock it, or HELP to unlock a deeper compassion and understanding and gentleness for yourself, so that you can embrace ALL of you… deepening the connection you have with ALL parts of you, and absolutely UNLOCKING the power of EMBRACING your Element, embracing who you REALLY are – and doesn’t that sound like something we ALL could do with in our lives?

Understanding the Element Brain + How it Might be Running the Show

As I mentioned in a previous video, much of how we show up in the world – our dominant emotions, patterns of behaviour, reoccurring thoughts, the things that cause is pain, the things we need – they are ALL based in our particular Element… the one Element that is OUR type, out of the Chinese Five Elements… whether that is Fire, Earth, Metal, Water or Wood…

.

Generally I always say, that as an acupuncturist, I view the world through “five-element-tinted-glasses”, and have done for well over a decade now – it has offered me a beautiful and insightful way of seeing people and nature and emotions and behaviours and ways of being, that is different to any other model, paradigm or system I have come across…

.

But we can also take this “tinted glasses” concept one step further, by saying that actually EACH of the individual Elements view the world through their own tinted glasses, and through each lens, the world looks slightly different…

.

So if we see the world though the lens of our particular Element, how we perceive things, and how we view our own stuff, is coloured by that, and it affects how we TRANSLATE or interpret things, creating what I like to call our Element Brain…

.

Even more interestingly our Element Brain will collect “evidence” to support what it believes or perceives (through it’s tinted glasses) is true… so a Fire Element person might collect “evidence” through situations, encounters, past experiences, to “prove” the fact and confirm the perception they have about themselves that they are unlovable… which in actual case, this is not true!

.

So wouldn’t it be helpful to FINALLY understand WHY you might experience the world in the way you do, WHY it might be or FEEL different to those other people around you in your life…?? Well the WHY comes from understanding yourself from the space of your Element… wouldn’t it feel nice to take away all the blame, the wrongness, the feeling like you SHOULD be different, the thought that you need to be fixed? And just so you know, you REALLY don’t need to be “fixed”, it’s just your Element brain and that is ok…

.

But THIS is the kind of powerful and magical stuff that comes from delving into the Five Elements – we can see if your Element Brain has been running the show and taking over, giving you false or incorrect perceptions on things… and we can start to re-wire our Element brains, so that we can look at the GIFTS of OUR Element, and celebrate those gifts, embrace them – celebrate and embrace OURSELVES – enabling us to feel happier and more balanced in our lives!

New Moon, Solar Eclipse in Leo + the Elements

The last few days I have been tired, exhausted tired, falling asleep at the drop of a hat tired… I’ve been putting it down to the waning moon energies, plus all the processing, growing + shifting we have been doing during this eclipse season, + just resting when my body tells me that’s what I need…
.
.
And today, with the New Moon, Solar Eclipse in Leo I had a quiet morning, sat in my pyjamas, at the exact time of the eclipse here in the UK, writing out everything my heart truly desires – because this is what the Leo moon is all about – all the big magical dreams, all the positive, beautiful things I want to call in to my life now…
.
.
I am a Scorpio, with Scorpio rising, but as my natal chart has my moon in Leo, I resonate massively with this new moon + it influences my emotions deeply (yes, there have been tears today too)…
.
.
I’m also aware that this interplay between the Fire + Water Elements in my astrology chart does in fact match the interplay in my Chinese Medicine Elemental make up – BUT if you saw my video last week, you will know that this ISN’T always the case! The astrology gurus say that this third eclipse is the one that will bring new energy in, allow us to get more clarity on where it is we are going next, what the changes this eclipse season has brought us actually mean for us going forward…

This is good news, as I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to my next steps revealing themselves + seeing what is to come, as so much has changed these last few eclipse-filled months, including me leaving my Thame acupuncture clinic after nearly ten years of practising there… As I say, big, big changes!

Why Should I Care What Element I am + How Will it Benefit me?

So we know there are Five Elements in Chinese Medicine – Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood – the ancient theory states that they are all within each of us, reflecting wider world in nature… but in Traditional Five Element acupuncture, we also recognise that we all have ONE particular Element (out of the five) that we are most aligned to, the one that influences us the most, the one that is like our default setting… It is like a “personality type” if you like – but as I have said before, and I will say it again, it really is SO much more than just that…

.

BUT why should you care? Why should you want to know more about this ancient stuff? It is really relevant to us in our modern day lives? I know I’m pretty biased, but oh my goodness, we need this ancient wisdom in our modern lives now more than ever!

.

It allows us to have a model through which we can really understand ourselves more deeply, accept ourselves truly as we are, be kinder to ourselves, have more compassion for ourselves, understand why we have (or have had) difficulties with certain themes or aspects of our lives, and so on…

.

Looking at ourselves from the space of our Element, and the Five Element framework, really is a holistic process… it really allows us to see ourselves as WHOLE beings, where nothing is lacking, or wrong… nothing is broken or in need of “fixing”…

.

So whilst this means that we don’t need to change who we are (we really don’t, we are our Element & that is ok), but it does provide us with a place to reflect, nurture, grow and perhaps even challenge ourselves for our highest good. Understanding yourself at this deeper level (of your Element) gives you choices…

.

Understanding who you are, why you behave in certain ways / feel certain things / crave particular things to feed your soul, and nourish your heart, gives you permission to be your true self, honouring your truest self… It is a special space in which to understand and to HEAL ourselves…

.

So, is your relationship with your Element / who you are, currently positive or negative? Are you getting what you and your Element NEED from life?

.

If you and your Element need reassurance, but someone gives you sympathy, there is an energetic mismatch there, so you will continue to seek reassurance elsewhere, and not feel good… Understanding what exactly it is that we need in any given situation, allows us to get back into balance (and health) more quickly…

.

Or if your true innate energetic make-up needs a lot of quiet alone time to rest and reflect, yet you’re living your life at 100 miles an hour, always surrounded by heaps of people – because that’s what your job requires of you, or that’s what society has deemed as the “acceptable norm” – it is very likely that, at some point, it will lead to physical illness, mental-emotional challenges, or a lack of alignment and not being on your path, not fulfilling your destiny on a spiritual-soul level…

.

So you can see, knowing what Element you are, its energetic blueprint, what it needs, what it’s challenges, gifts and patterns are – it can affect our lives in BIG ways and on every level – our decisions and actions (+ whether they are aligned or in resistance to our own particular Element) move us more towards, or away from, better balance, and better health in our lives… And the Five Elements are ALL about being in balance… If we work with our Element energy, we can live happier, healthier lives that are in flow… and that is why you need to know about them!

What are the Chinese Five Elements + How are they Different?

As I’m sure you’re aware, there are many modalities that have the Elements at the core of their messages, understandings and teachings… they are also usually the ancient and powerful practises, such as astrology, Ayurvedic medicine and yoga. Because, let’s face it, the ancient cultures really understood the importance of living in sync with nature, the seasons, the planets, the moon – the energetic patterns and shifts and alignments…

.

And typically, the four Elements that these traditions tend to use are Fire, Earth, Water and AIR… In Chinese medicine, they are slightly different… Instead of air, we have Metal – though the vibe or feel of these energies can be very similar… and we also have Wood as an additional Element in the mix… But it should be said that if you are ONE particular Element in astrology, you won’t NECESSARILY be the same one in Chinese Medicine – it might be, but it often isn’t, and that’s where initially, some confusion can come in…

.

So, in traditional Five Element Acupuncture, there is the theory that the Five Elements – Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood – are ALL within each of us, mirroring how they are all present in nature to ensure balance in the ecosystem… but we also recognise that we all have ONE particular Element that we are most aligned to, the one that influences us the most, the one that might need more support than the others…

.

This main one is OUR Element, the one that is like our default setting, the one that shows itself the most in everything that we do. This group of “Element personality types”, for want of a better term (because it REALLY is SO much more than that), but it, provides a framework for us to understand ourselves more deeply, so that we can have more balanced physical and emotional health.

.

Understanding ourselves in this way focuses on the fact that we don’t need fixing or changing (even if we think we do), we are not broken or lacking – we are just OUR Element, and that is ok. It’s ok if that is different to those around us, our family, our friends, our work colleagues… they will just be DIFFERENT Elements to us… and that’s ok…

.

Understanding yourself in this way, THROUGH the lens of the Five Elements, allows you to breathe a sigh of relief, and gives you FREEDOM and permission to really just be YOU. It ALLOWS you to understand yourself at a deep, transformational level. It helps you to connect into and be able to CELEBRATE your TRUEST self…

.

And I want to share this incredible magic with you, to spread this knowledge far and wide, so that EVERYONE can experience the life-changing level of self-acceptance and FLOW that comes from this ancient Chinese wisdom.
